Today I purchased a coconut at the grocery store. There was a bunch of them, and I chose a pretty one, and brought it home. I then proceeded to do violence to it in a multitude of ways, starting with hammer and nail, proceeding through wrench, and finally ending up with an axe outside on the flagstones. I got it open, though, poured the water into a tiny glass where I mixed it with rum and some pineapple juice, which was yummy! The meat was very white and had a perfect chewy consistency and a nice sweet taste, and I think I'm gonna use some of it and try to dry it. These activities took up most of my evening, and during that time I asked myself some Very Important questions to which I found no answers...

Who buys coconuts? What do they do with them? How do they do it to them?

I do not particularly like coconuts, though coconut milk is divine.

I feel like I knew that about you, we must have discussed coconuts before. You are right, though, coconut milk is diving. Mmmmmmm.....

Lol.. I'm sitting here laughing as I picture the physical comedic torture you inflicted in that poor coconut. Poor comedy gold ala Three Stooges or Karl Marx.

A quick reply, I'm almost on my way out of the door: when I was younger, we used to split them in half and drill a hole and then hang them up for the birdies in winter (draining the liquid and leaving the meat).

Ah, right, I've seen that around, but we've never tried ourselves. I did throw some outside in the general direction of the bird-feeder, but no real interest so far.

In the tropics, you can buy them with the two holes pierced and with straws in the holes...they are a fairly common drink...

We used to buy them here before I spent all my days on the computer) and would break apart with a heavy mallet.....then separate the meat from the shell...the liquid disappeared with the opening.

you can buy sweetened coconut milk canned in the Oriental goods section of the super market. I use it sparingly in sauces to sweeten and flavor chicken and beef stews...

I am leaving for Boston early (3 AM) Friday morning....will be there a week...if the LK books come before them I will send off to you...but otherwise when I return...

btw..I LOVED Lord of the Hive...I could not wait for the hard copy so downloaded onto the Kindle....I will review....I really did love the book...I thought it flowed smoothly and in good time sequence...the POV did not bother me like it seemed to you. I will do a review for you when I return....I will undoubtedly re-read on the trip...

I love your puffin picture. !!!!! (very very jealous)

In Singapore, we often have people selling coconuts at festivals and events like that. The tops are usually cut off (making a little "lid") and they come with a straw (for the juice) and a spoon (for scraping out the flesh -- mmm). It makes for a really refreshing drink/snack!

Coconut milk is also used in curries, it really makes a huge difference with the taste. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it...

Yi Qing? Hi! Mmmmm, it does sound very yummy... I use coconut milk in chicken stews a lot, and that's fantastic, but I'll have to try it in a curry.

I guess what I lack is a convenient implement to cut off the top with... bloody difficult! :P

Yup! Actually, I have an LJ account, but it's been so long since I used it that I've forgotten the password, haha.

This is where a large carving knife comes in handy eh :-)

btw, I'm gonna send you an email right after this re: my trip...!
