Yaaaaay, new Sanctuary!! And this week I actually loved the episode. Really thoroughly enjoyed watching it and loved it a whole lot! It was intriguing and mysterious and I certainly didn't figure it out ahead of time. Of course I knew *something* was up, and I was really really hoping Bigfoot wasn't dead (but I don't trust them after Ashley), but still, something would be up, because Helen seemed quite her usual self in the preview for next week.
There's been a lot of complaints that it wasn't exciting enough, that it was obvious from the start that it was gonna turn out ok. Come on, people, you can't have it both ways. I *way* prefer knowing it's gonna turn out ok, because otherwise is when stuff like Ashley dying happens. Either characters can die, or otherwise we're always gonna know for every single episode that everyone is always gonna be alright at the end. *sigh*
I will say that I for one certainly liked the tone of the episode, and sure, it definitely set it up so you could be reasonably sure everything would turn out fine. Regardless, the episode was much more about the mystery than about the tragedy. Amanda is a fantastic actor, and she certainly sold Helen going crazy wonderfully, and Ryan Robbins did a great job as Henry mourning his best friend, but even so, it wasn't a sad episode (compare Euology, or something, regardless of my personal opinion about that particular episode, it had an entirely different tone of sorrow about it), and I liked that.
I will say that my favourite scene, of course, was that last scene with Helen, Will, and Kate, and Helen being just obnoxiously pleased that her plan worked. I would have liked to see a little bit more closure between Henry and Bigfoot, and did either Helen or Bigfoot realize what they would put Henry through by going through with this? I kinda hope they talked about it before. (Did Helen realize what she would put herself through? But when you look at that last scene, it seems like she thought it was fun, maybe living 158 years makes you look for a different kind of challenge.)
How long has Bigfoot been with the Sanctuary anyway? I don't think they've ever said. But the way she refers to him as 'her oldest friend' it's gotta be a significant amount of time considering her life.
I wish I could say something about the directing, but alas, I know very little of it. I've grasped enough to be able to follow commentaries, I know about wide shots and coverage and steady cams, but I have no idea how to think in that language. I don't consciously notice direction, but that said, I know that the only episodes I enjoyed of the last seasons of The L Word were the ones Angela Robinson directed. So I realize it's important. And I can't speak much for Amanda's technique, but I can say that I very very much enjoyed the episode. I loved the tone and the pacing and yadda yadda. The tiling was somewhat less relevant than last week, but there wasn't all that much of it anyway, so it doesn't matter.
And something else that made me squee a little was how last week's Mission over at SanctuaryAndBeyond.ca was totally relevant. When I was playing I was all 'dude, this is a little lame, just click the right answers and you don't have to do anything...', but then that was totally the set-up for this week's episode. Which was kinda cool. So if I had known what a Chilean Shepherd Frog did, I might have been able to figure out the answers this week a lot faster. Cool!
No new episode next week in favour of a Bond-marathon. Bah. *highly annoyed*
