I'd sort of forgotten how much I love Rae Dawn Chong. There's something so incredibly soothing about her, she's beautiful without arrogance, and her voice is amazing. I guess casting her as a nun is a bit of type casting, but she fits the role so well.
But seriously, Havoc, flirting with a nun? Come on.
It doesn't happen often that I spontaneously wanna write m/m slash, but dude, Havoc and Superman totally have chemistry. WAY more than either of them has with Christina even if they're both clearly set up to be potential love interests for her. Which of course leaves Sister Catherine for Christina, but I can't write her with a NUN. Argh! And Christina/Rae Dawn Chong would have been such a beautiful pairing. Why did she have to play a nun???
Oh my god, the lighting on this thing sucks so bad. I wanna stick the entire thing in PhotoShop and do a duplicate/screen so that I'll be able to see something... it's full daylight, and Christina's eyes are black hollows, and her lips are so dark the color flips over to a uniform black... good grief!!
I really like Dean Cain's character. He's charismatic, good-looking, service-minded, and through-and-through evil betraying murderous back-stabbing etc.. It's awesome. As opposed to the Havoc guy, who's mostly really annoying...
I really really appreciate that Christina has scenes with Rae Dawn Chong, but again, the nun thing is sort of cramping my fic. Why did she have to play a nun??? Couldn't she just have been a compassionate social worker? Or the church care-taker, or whatever, why a NUN???
And she's such a wonderfully kick-ass nun. She wear army fatigues, drives a huge-ass car called the Crusher (or some such), and wears a small cross on a chain at her belt, that conveniently connects to a knife at the other end of the chain... WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO BE A NUN??? I wanna write fic on her and Christina, dammit!
But if the nun can hang out in bars and drink alcohol, maybe she can make sex with Suzy (Christina's character)? I mean, lesbian sex isn't even considered actual sex in the eyes of the Catholic church, is it?
Oh, I guess somewhere along all my drooling and pouting over Christina and Rae Dawn people kicked some ass and killed some people and generally ran around being violent... honestly, I don't care.
Final verdict: better than Cold Vengeance. Which isn't saying much. But the characterizations weren't as blatantly painful as in CV. And acting-wise it was pretty decent all around as well. Dean Cain, I like Dean Cain, although I never really got why he was so cruel. Scheming and evil, sure, but the cruel part didn't really come across as authentic. The hero-dude mostly annoyed me, but he was a good fighter, and it's probably just me projecting my annoyance at him because Christina was all into him.
And really, again with the Christina in a relatively "girly" (for lack of a better word) female role. Or, I don't know what to say. I hate it when women are emotional and flip-flopping... first she snaps at him, and then she apologizes, and then she sleeps with him, and then she yells at him, and then she apologizes and back and forth and back and forth and argh! And I especially hate it when Christina portrays women like this, because I've seen her be more assertive, and standing up for herself, and making her decisions and standing by them until convinced otherwise for actual reasons and not pretend ones... It's really hard to put words to this distinction, between an annoyingly wounded female and an attractively wounded female, but there is a difference, and Suzy Blaine is more of the first kind, just like Cassandra Diaz, whereas Vicki Nelson and Jessica Wilson are definitely the second kind.
The general looting/burning/raping & pillaging was a bit odd. In my experience with TV, that level of violence somewhere usually attracts attention of people higher up the law enforcement ladder, so having paid off one crooked police chief for that neighbourhood I wouldn't think would be enough to be allowed to continue with it. But what do I know, I've never burnt down an entire section of a city, organized gangs to terrorize the masses, and paid off the police chief to turn a blind eye.
Christina was lovely, as always. I just wish the movie hadn't been so dark. I mean, I could barely see her in most scenes. Even the ones in full supposed day-light I had to tilt my computer screen to that over-light angle in order to make out people's features.
Decent B-action with good actors and good fight-scenes. Now if I can only figure out a way to write nun-femslash... I should get a Rae Dawn Chong icon...
