Over at Dorothy Surrenders Dorothy (also known as Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com) posts her 'weekend crush' every weekend. I'm not gonna do this regularly, and it's not even weekend, but the general idea fits well.
Now, you all know that I'm a fan of Melissa Etheridge. Dolly Parton I've never listened to as intently, but growing up in a house where country music was the main fare until I got old enough to buy my own albums I certainly like her a fair amount. Thanks initially to above-mentioned AfterEllen (tho in this case globalgrrl) I watched a bunch of clips from Melissa & Dolly's collaboration back in 2003 on CMT's Crossroads, and fell instantly for Jolene. A song I've known forever, but never paid much attention to. Until I heard Melissa sing it. Now, of course I'm biased, because I've never met anything by Melissa that I didn't like, but this is an unusually lovely cover. I love Melissa's voice, and she and Dolly do some really nice harmonizing.

btw..I am an avid country music fan... (the older country stars, not the new ones)...and have all of the Dolly albums which are, by and large, super. She writes extremenly well.
Also on my "most favorite" list are Emmy Lou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Jean Shepard (no one knows her, but I lived her records day and night for a long long time)
Thanks for the entry..

I can't get over how lovely that song is when Melissa sings it. I've listened to it on my mp3-player all afternoon, and now that I'm back on the computer it's playing in the background. Here are some more songs from that evening, Dolly interpreting Melissa certainly is... interesting. :P http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dolly+etheridge&search=Search
I love country. Growing up, my father would buy all these cheap multi-disc country collections, and I remember hearing Patsy Cline for the first time and falling head over heels... what a woman! Other favourites are Lynn Anderson and Johnny Cash.
Oh, also, have you seen Melissa's new video? The happy happy one that includes Tammy, and, I tthink, their kids! I have no idea if this link works, but if you haven't seen it and it doesn't work, let me know, and I'll tamper with it.

Also the Dolly Parton and Melissa duets were super...Who would have thought of pairing those two. But M does a super job on the Dolly songs..especially "I Will Always Love Your" a favorite of mine anyhow..
