She turns up on your doorstep in the middle of the night. Half an hour earlier than you'd predicted. She's got that lost look in her eyes. Someone told you in the Academy that there are many horrors you'll get used to, but the day you don't react to an abused child, it's time to retire. The things you've seen today is why she's here now, burrowing her face in your neck, slipping her palms beneath your shirt against your waist. Left Harvey at home because you've seen what she's seen, you know the desperation that she's feeling. You back up against the bed, sit down, she cups your face, kisses you. You mouth 'I love you' against her lips as you fumble with the buttons of her blouse.

Come morning she'll deny this ever happened.

(And you'll let her.)

I read another Cagney/Lacey fic a while ago and I wonder if you have I link to it because I lost it. It's a letter from Cagney to Lacey that she's leaving New York because she loves Lacey too much.
