“Dad, what was it like, the first time you toured in Japan?”

An innocent question over the dinner table, spawned by a Queen documentary filled with mistakes and exaggerations on TV the other night, and the arrival of a letter from Brian last week. A satisfying answer filled with cherry blossoms, screaming fans, and cultural awkwardnesses. Hints of riding high on the wave of fame; a rueful admission that he should have known better to let them know he is human, yet make sure he expects them to know better when they get older. Doesn't tell them that the buttons of his favourite souvenir silk shirt weren't torn in his first encounter with crazy fans, like he let Veronica believe, but by Freddie. When they were so far away from his new wife, literally on the other side of the earth, and John let Freddie fuck him for the first time.

“Dad, what was Freddie like?”

It's a reasonable question. His youngest sons never met Freddie, never experienced Queen, and while he'll tell them his truths, the world paints a vastly different portrait. He shuts down the house for the night, turns off lights and locks doors, and finds himself in front of the small framed picture on a living room shelf. The four of them, a promotion for Innuendo. Freddie kissed him goodbye afterwards. The last time they made love wasn't special. A quick fuck in a hotel room on the Magic Tour. They thought they'd have forever. But the last kiss still brings tears to his eyes. He tells his sons that Freddie was an amazing musician, a considerate friend, that he was insecure, and loving, and human. He doesn't tell them that he thinks about him every day, that their mother is the love of his life, but he had an affair with Freddie for 15 years. That's his own precious burden. He returns the picture to its shelf, turns off the light. Goes to bed with a mixture of longing and shame, the sound of his wife's soft breaths next to him, and the taste of Freddie on his lips.
